Some Facts

Service Area

Did you know: the State of Connecticut requires ALL contractors to be licensed? The state also requires contractors to carry workers compensation insurance. It is in your best interest that they also carry Liability insurance. The Environmental Protection Agency requires ALL contractors to be Lead-Safe Certified.

Protect yourself: you should make sure that the contractor you hire has a valid State of Connecticut contractors license. You should also make sure they are Lead-Safe Certified. Also you should ask the contractor you hire to provide an insurance binder sent from his agent with you named as certificate holder. If it isn't sent directly from the agent there is a chance the insurance has been cancelled. Also if his insurance is cancelled during your project the insurance agent has a way of notifying you of the cancellation. You should also get a copy of their workers compensation policy or a copy of the State of Connecticut form # 6B which exempts them from having to carry the insurance. When you do business with Winter Harbor Remodeling Services LLC. we will provide you with all three of these so you know you are protected.

Home Improvement Contract requirements in Connecticut

The days of the gentleman's handshake are gone.

The law demands written contracts and that means

more than a quick estimate and your signature.

Here's what Connecticut law requires of a home improvement contract:

  1. It must be in writing, including all changes and modifications.
  2. It must include four dates: the date the contract is signed, the date the work will begin, the date by which the work will be completed, and the date by which the homeowner may cancel the transaction.
  3. It must have the contractor's home improvement registration number.
  4. It must include a Notice of the Customer's Right to Cancel within three business days after signing the contract. The notice must be attached to and made part of the contract, and must be in duplicate.
  5. The notice contained in the contract must be near the customer's signature and in substantially the following form: You the buyer may cancel this transaction at any time prior to midnight on the third business day after the date of this transaction. NOTE: Saturday is a legal business day in Connecticut.
  6. Both you and the contractor must sign and date the contract.
  7. The contractor must give you a completed copy of the contract to keep.
